Marston's takes Ringwood to Waitrose

16 May, 2008

Marston's has launched three beers in Waitrose from Hampshire brewery Ringwood, which did not have an off-trade presence before it was taken over by the Midlands brewer last summer.

Ringwood Old Thumper, Fortyniner and Best Bitter will be sold in 50cl bottles. And the launches are part of Marston's plan to become a champion of bottled ale by making take-home drinking more of an "experience".

It also hopes to work closely with off-trade chains such as Threshers to make more of its increased range, after taking over Oxfordshire-based Refresh UK.

Marston's has appointed Wychwood group sales director James Coyle as its new head of take-home and export sales. Coyle, who handled all off-trade sales at Refresh, takes over from Steve Benton, who is moving to deal with on-trade sales for the brewer. Coyle had been at Marston's before he moved to Wychwood.

He said: "I think a lot of off-trade retailers can take lessons from what the on-trade does when it is Halloween, or cricket or football. They event market it, and it brings people out of the house and into the pub."
