Origin takes on Spanish winery

Origin’s mission to become a one-stop shop for old world wine has gathered pace with the addition of Spanish estate Alvisa to its growing portfolio of exclusive labels.

Chief executive Bernard Fontannaz said he was very pleased to take on a cellar that crushes 80 tons of grapes in a modern and efficient winery.

He added: “We already exported some good volumes with Alvisa out of Spain and we are looking forward to developing that side of the business further as Spain is a strategic part of our expansion plan.

“We believe Alvisa is perfectly suited for our range extension out of Spain.”

Alvisa’s managing director Denis Bublikov added: “We started in Spain by acquiring a distillery, and now that we have extended into wine production it is paramount for us to work with reliable partner on a long-term basis in order to establish a sustainable export market. It is a new field for us but we are confident that, with our set up, we can become quickly an important player.”

The majority of Origin’s portfolio stems from South Africa, where it is based, but it is determined to break into the new world too.

A range of new wines purposely blended by its global wine development manager Ivo Hasler for Origin’s established customers will soon appear on UK shelves.
