Tesco appoints new head of BWS

19 September, 2017

Robert Cooke has taken over as BWS director at Tesco following a long and varied career in the retail industry.

Cooke was previously commercial strategy and development director at Tesco, a role he held since May 2016.

He had also served as commercial operations director and director of general merchandise at Britain's largest retailer.

Cooke started out at Woolworths in 2000 and joined Sainsbury’s in April 2009, where he worked his way up to head of buying before leaving for Tesco in 2013.

He is now heading up the BWS team.

DRN understands that Tesco has parted company with Gavin Warburton and James Davis MW.

Warburton was a Tesco lifer and had headed the BWS team for nearly three years. He joined as a buyer in 2000 and had been a leading figure in its BWS team since 2010, barring a six-month stint in dairy. After Dan Jago left the business, Warburton was the most senior figure in the BWS team.

Davis was in his second spell at Tesco. He was wine buying manager from 2004-07, before leaving to study for his MW at Greene King. He re-joined Tesco as wine category buying manager in May 2015 after Laura Jewell MW left the retailer.

Tesco confirmed to DRN that Cooke has taken over as BWS director, but would not comment on other individuals.
