Glen Moray explores cider flavours with latest project
Glen Moray Distillery has launched the Glen Moray Cider Cask Project, which is a small batch single malt whisky expression that is exclusive to the UK.
The newcomer is also the first release from the new Elgin Curiosity range, which embraces Glen Moray’s passion for experimentation and the desire to push the boundaries and produce single malt whiskies that are bold with complex aromas and exciting flavours.
The Scottish Thistly Cross Cider has been using Glen Moray’s ex-Bourbon barrels to create its own Whisky Cask Cider.
Graham Coull, Glen Moray’s master distillery, decided to experiment and has been transferring the single malt, which is first aged in American Oak ex-Bourbon barrels, into Thistly Cross Cider casks for several months.
Coull said: “For me the inspiration was simple. When I first tasted the Whisky Cider Cask it was immediately obvious that the whisky flavours complemented the cider flavours perfectly. The logical next step for me was to see what the cider could bring to the whisky.”
The result is Glen Moray’s Cider Cask Project (rsp: £54.99). The producer said the cider brings caramelised apple notes that mix perfectly with intense vanilla, which is a flavour found in all Glen Moray Single Malt Whiskies.
Coull added: “We are all very excited at Glen Moray Distillery about the launch of Glen Moray’s Cider Cask Project Whisky and The Elgin Curiosity range. As Master Distiller of this historic distillery, I am keen to constantly evolve and create new whiskies which showcase the quality and breadth of whiskies which we can produce, reinforcing our message that Glen Moray is The Gateway to Flavour.”
The newcomer will be stocked exclusively by thewhiskyexchange.com until the end of October, and then from November it will be listed with a number of specialist retailers.
