Santa Tresa creates first sparkling organic Frappato

An organic Sicilian producer claims to have created the only sparkling organic Frappato wine on the market.

Santa Tresa, Stefano Girelli’s organic Sicilian estate, has been growing Frappato for many years. The producer blends the local Vittoria grape variety with Nero d’Avola to make Cerasuolo di Vittoria and also a pure Frappato, which is one of its best-selling styles.

The naturally high acidity and refined balance of Frappato led the team towards spumante and as a consequence the producer is now launching Il Frappato di Santa Tresa Spumante (rsp: £14.99)

The Frappato grapes are 100% from the Santa Tresa estate, where the yield is extremely limited. The secondary fermentation takes place in stainless steel tanks.

Girelli said: “Frappato is the perfect expression of the Vittoria area and of Santa Tresa. This is a genuinely unique wine, which we have been working hard to perfect and we are excited both by the resulting wine and by the fact that we are the first to make this style.”

Joy Edmondson, buying and marketing director for distributor, North South Wines, said: “Santa Tresa Frappato Spumante represents a great commercial opportunity for our customers as it taps into so many trends at once: Sparkling Italy is still driving most of the growth in the market, consumers are getting more and more into organic and are ready to spend more on organic wine (38% more per bottle according the April 19 IWSR report), it is also vegan friendly which is high in demand and finally it is very pleasing to the eye thanks to its light pink colour and premium packaging.”
