Furmint February 2020 offers retailers the chance to win a trip to Tokaj

Wines of Hungary UK will be bringing Furmint February back to the UK in 2020.

The campaign, which celebrates 20 years of dry Furmint wines being produced in Hungary, will comprise a range of activities in the UK.

The event kicks off with a media and trade tasting of more than 150 Furmint wines from 35 producers at Merchant Taylor’s Hall, EC2 on January 29, 2020.

Attendees will be able to taste sparkling, dry and sweet Furmint wines from Tokaj, Somlo, Eger, Badacsony and Csopak.

Visitors can also learn more about these at two masterclasses: Caroline Gilby MW will host a “20 years of Furmint” masterclass and vertical tasting with iconic wines; and Laszlo Balint will host a session on “The many faces of Furmint”.

Gilby MW, said: “I have been a firm believer in the quality and potential of dry Furmint, every since tasting Szepsy’s legendary Uragya 2000 in his cellars. I, for one, am looking forward to this unique opportunity to taste and compare nearly two decades of rare wines showing how Furmint can age and how winemaking has evolved. It is time to add Furmint to the list of great white grapes.

"It can offer everything from fine sparklers to complex layered dry wines to world class sweet wines, always underpinned by that streak of appetising acidity.”

Throughout February importers and retailers will have the opportunity to win a trip to Tokaj. They will be encouraged to showcase Furmint with a series of tastings, dinners and special offers, all designed to help wine lovers to taste and learn more about Hungary’s flagship grape variety.

Those who demonstrate increased listings and promotional activities organised by their partners, could win a three-day trip to Hungary for three people.

Zsuzsa Toronyi, Wines of Hungary UK, said: “We brought Furmint to the UK for the first time in 2019 and the wines and the initiatives were both incredibly well received by the wine enthusiasts here. Everyone was excited to try something new and we were overwhelmed by the response. This year we are doing even more and can’t wait to shine a light on Furmint once again.”
