Drinks Retailing Awards 2020: the winners revealed

Waitrose, Asda, Marks & Spencer, Morrisons and The Whisky Exchange were just some of the retailers called to the stage at this year’s Drinks Retailing Awards.

The annual ceremony, which took place last night at The Dorchester Hotel in London, is designed to reward excellence in drinks retailing across a number of sectors, including supermarkets, wine merchants, independent specialists, convenience stores, online retailers and wholesalers.

Three multiple grocers managed to secure two awards apiece this year, with Waitrose recognised as both Innovative Retailer of the Year and Multiple Wine Retailer of the Year; Asda awarded for both its Drinks Buying Team of the Year and Best Retailer Promotion of the Year (for its festive gin promotion); and Morrisons picking up awards for Multiple Champagne Retailer of the Year and also Supermarket of the Year.

The Whisky Exchange also collected two awards: for Independent Spirits Retailer of the Year and Online Retailer of the Year. Tesco picked up the award for Multiple Cider Retailer, Marks & Spencer shone through as Multiple Beer Retailer of the Year and Booths won Multiple Spirits Retailer of the Year.

The Co-op was named as Convenience Chain of the Year. 

A raft of independent drinks specialists also took to the stage, starting with the award for Newcomer of the Year, which this year went to a London-based beer specialist, Indiebeer. 

Pilango, a previous winner of the Newcomer award, was recognised as this year’s Independent Cider Retailer, while Bath Road Beers beat off competition to secure the Independent Beer Retailer award.

Lea & Sandeman, the four-strong London-based wine retailer, was awarded Independent Champagne Retailer for 2020, while the Independent Wine Retailer of the Year was given to Dunell’s.

Two Sussex-based independent wine retailers also took to the stage: South Downs Cellars took the Independent Drinks Retailer gong while Hennings Wine, which has four shops in West Sussex, took the award for Regional Chain of the Year.

Other awards went to Connolly’s for Hybrid Retailer of the Year, in recognition of its success in balancing a wine bar and retail concept under one roof; Hedonism for Luxury Drinks Retailer of the Year; Costcutter Brockley for Convenience Drinks Retailer of the Year; and Parfetts for Drinks Wholesaler of the Year.
