Thornbridge releases Shelby IPA for Peaky Blinders fans
Thornbridge has created an IPA called Shelby to serve as the official beer of hit BBC show Peaky Blinders.
The Derbyshire brewer, which is responsible for popular IPAs like Jaipur, AM:MR and Green Mountain, took its inspiration from the beer styles that were popular in 1919.
Peaky Blinders is set in the aftermath of World War I and centres on the exploits of the Shelby clan, a group of notorious Birmingham gangsters with a penchant for razors.
The Peaky Blinders run a pub called The Garrison and put away plenty of beer and Irish whiskey in most episodes, and Thornbridge believes The Garrison would be proud to serve the 5% abv Shelby IPA.
It is brewed with Fuggles and Bramling Cross hops. Shelby IPA is said to pour golden amber in colour, with a nose of stone fruit and red berries, a gentle maltiness on the palate and a citrus, lemon-pith bitterness.
“We wanted to ensure we created something that the Peaky Blinders would have found on the bar at The Garrison and we think we’ve done just that,” said Thornbridge chief executive Simon Webster. “We hope Shelby will bring pleasure to many.”
This is not the first time the Peaky Blinders name been used in the alcoholic drinks sector.
Stourbridge-based brewery Sadler’s sells a Peaky Blinder lager and it released the popular brew in 33cl cans in time for season five of the show, which aired last year. It also has a Peaky Blinders spirits range, featuring Irish whiskey, gin and spiced rum, along with its ale and lager ranges. These drinks are not in any way affiliated with the Peaky Blinders TV series.
Steve Knight, creator and writer of Peaky Blinders, said: “Shelby beer is the first and only legitimate Peaky endorsed beer. It has been crafted to be the same brew the Peaky boys would have drunk in the pubs of Small Heath. It really is the authentic taste of the Peaky Blinders world.”
Global content producer Endemol Shine Group and Peaky Blinders producer Caryn Mandabach Productions make the new Shelby IPA a reality.
Jane Smith, director at Endemol Shine Group, said: “We have always wanted to find the right partner for a legitimate beer inspired by the Peaky Blinders series. Thornbridge are that partner as they are truly passionate about the product they are creating which is an authentic beer capturing the essence of the world of Peaky Blinders. We look forward to a long and fruitful partnership.”
