Top wine honours to Tesco and M&S
Tesco and Marks & Spencer have topped the charts for supermarket own-label in the 2010 International Wine Challenge, the results of which were revealed at the London International Wine Fair.
The retailers each picked up 62 awards for their own-label wines, with M&S bagging five golds.
Sainsbury’s received 59 awards, Asda 56 and Waitrose 18.
Gold medal wines included Asda’s Extra Special Riesling, the Co-op’s Leyda Valley Sauvignon, M&S Moscatel Rosado, Sainsbury’s Taste the Difference Gavi and Waitrose Reserve Shiraz.
Of the 7,726 medals awarded in total, 326 were gold and 1,445 silver, both 14% ahead of last year. France remained at the top of the international league table with 947 medals and 75 golds.
IWC event director Chris Ashton said: “Wines carrying the IWC logo and medal recognition enjoy significant commercial advantages.”?The IWC Gold Medal Tasting and trophy announcement will be held at Lord’s cricket ground in London on June 30.
